Man threatens to shoot mom

Walter Ka Nkosi

Lebowakgomo - A 21-year-old man has been arrested on charges of threatening to shoot his mother.

His mother phoned the police after her son, who dropped out of school last year, arrived home late on Wednesday and accused her of treating him badly.

"She said he threatened to shoot her if she didn't treat him better. When he went to his bedroom, she quickly phoned the police," said Captain Mamphaswa Seabi, spokesperson for the Lebowakgomo police station near Polokwane.

He said that when police arrived at the house in Makotse village, they found him asleep.

The woke him up, arrested him and confiscated two unlicensed firearms, a 9mm pistol and a 7.65mm pistol.

"We will track down their lawful owners and find out how the weapons got into the boy's hands," he said.

He said the teenager is expected to appear in the Thabamoopo Magistrate's Court soon.

Brighter life for needy

Good job: Polokwane municipal workers instal electricity cables in Seshego township. Photo: Moyahabo Mabeba

Some of the frustrations experienced by poor households who have survived without electricity in Polokwane, Limpopo, are now coming to an end.

The city's municipality has embarked on a master plan, dubbed the "Electricity Rehabilitation Programme", which focuses on the free installation of electricity in houses within its area of jurisdiction.

About 1500 households will benefit from the project which is already in the works.

According to municipality spokesman Simon Mokoatedi the project for the upgrading of existing infrastructure and the installation of electricity in poverty-stricken households will cost millions.

Mokoatedi told Sowetan yesterday that R1million had already been spent on the installation of high and low voltage electrical systems in the township of Seshego outside the provincial capital, Polokwane.

"For the past two financial years we have allocated R1million to meet the needs for electricity in every household.

"We began by upgrading the old infrastructure to supplement more power," Mokoatedi said.

"This is part of the government's policy to provide free basic services to the needy."

The project, currently running in Seshego Zone 2 and 3, has brightened life for many families in the huge township.

Most of the houses set to benefit from the scheme are those built by the old apartheid government.

Mokete Seshibe, a 72-year-old widow, is justifiably on cloud nine about the installation of free electricity for her and her family.

Over the past years she has struggled to support her large family on her meagre pension and has been unable to pay for electricity.

"My life and that of my children and grandchildren is about to change. We have been living in darkness for the past 20 years and now this is like a dream come true," Seshibe says.

"I have been longing for this moment to come but with the social grant that I receive every month, I couldn't afford to instal electricity.

"But now that the municipality has come up with this plan, I am looking forward to a new, bright life."

JAIL FOR BABY RAPIST

The Musina teenager who admitted in the regional court that he raped his 14-month-old cousin last year, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on Friday.
After the incident the strongly built teenager first said his cousin "fell" when he carried the stunned toddler back to the house in an area known as Blikkiesdorp where the family had gathered for a party. She was taken to the Musina Hospital where doctors examined her.

Medical evidence before court explained in detail the severity of the girl's injuries. She was transferred to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital where she received the first of several reconstructive surgeries. She was discharged ten days later but when her mother failed to bring her back for follow-up medical care, social workers placed both the girl and her eight-year-old sister in foster care, where they still remain. The victim underwent her last reconstructive surgery last month.
When members of the child protection unit visited the family home in Musina, the teenager told the investigating officer, inspector Masiwa Dzagama, that he used his finger to penetrate the girl.
The teenager's mother handed the girl's underwear and a bloodied T-shirt to the police. DNA tests later determined that the teenager ejaculated in the girl.

HE IS MY HERO

by Pierre Bloem on Thu, 2008-02-28 08:20. Northern Review: News

They watched television together and laughed only an hour before an employee killed her grandfather, Omra Cassim.

Maxi Monyela worked for the Cassim family of Nirvana for eight years and never spoke or showed one word of anger towards them. But last Monday night Nazrana Cassim (21) and her family saw a very different side of the man they trusted. Monyela attacked Cassim in the family's house and stabbed her more than 20 times.

She lost 50 percent of her blood by the time she arrived at the hospital but she managed to stay conscious during the whole ordeal.

As she enters the room, one can see the scars and clips in her head and the bandages around her hand and neck from the stab wounds. "I heard my grandfather scream while I was watching television. I went to the closed door and asked what was wrong but Monyela told me nothing was wrong and that he was just screaming.

"I knew something was wrong, I opened the door and saw my grandfather lying on the ground. I walked towards him and suddenly felt someone grabbing me from behind and starting to stab me. The light was off so I could not see anything and just kicked and screamed the whole time to get away from him.

"I could feel his power and knew he wanted to kill me. After I fell to the floor read more.

Mitchell House LIFE SKILL & TRAINING CENTRE OPEN

Mitchell House LIFE SKILL & TRAINING CENTRE OPEN ON 19 JANUARY 2008

The Enrichment Centre caters for pupils with moderate to severe cognitive and or physical disabilities, who require extensive ongoing support in one or more major life activity in order to participate in integrated community settings and to enjoy a quality of life that is available to citizens with fewer or no disabilities.
Support may be required for life activities such as mobility, communication, self-care and learning as necessary for independent living and employment.
Intervention for the pupils who attend the Enrichment centre involves Individualised Education Plans designed according to each pupil's unique needs. Each Individualised Plan provides a holistic, inclusive and supportive educational programme for the pupil.
At present sixteen pupils attend the Centre, their ages varying from 6 years to 16 years. We are currently developing a Life-skill and training programme for the older pupils.
It is imperative that the service we offer is extended in order to provide a programme which supports young adults, thus ensuring that they become contributing members of our community.
In any given community, whether geographic or cultural, a certain number of children belonging to that community will require specific support interventions.
Due to the development of the Mitchell House College, the extension of the Enrichment Centre falls within the demographic of the school community.
We currently have a waiting list of fourteen children.
Some of these children have been on our waiting list for three years.
These parents are desperate to enrol their children at the Enrichment Centre so that they can receive the specialised intervention necessary for their development.
The Enrichment Centre is the only facility in Polokwane which caters for children with physical disabilities and which offers programmes which support children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Autism; severe challenging behaviour) and children in need of Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
There is no other option or choice for families living in our community.

The extension of the Enrichment Centre would:
Provide a training programme for young adults.
Cater for children on the waiting list.
    Ensure younger intake.
    Create a feeding system.

It is imperative that the extension of the Enrichment Centre upholds the ethos upon which "Pathways"was built.
Always striving for and maintaining excellence and above all nurturing and supporting families and children with disabilities re- gardless of race, religion, creed, colour, gender or socioeconomic background.

Limpopo Student leaders up for murder

Student leaders up for murder
26/02/2008 13:38  - (SA)

Walter Ka Nkosi

Polokwane - Three student leaders at the University of Limpopo have been accused of throwing a fellow student out of a moving taxi, killing him.

A meeting was held between the Student Representative Council (SRC) and vice chancellor Professor Mahlo Mokgalong on Monday about expelling the students pending the outcome of their trial.

Professor Mokgalong said he could not comment on Tuesday because university protocol was strict about all media statements being made through spokesperson Kgalema Mohuba.

Mohuba could not be reached for comment, however.

But one member of the SRC, who asked not to be named, confirmed that it was agreed that the three students not be allowed back on campus.

"Although we are happy about the law taking its course, we stressed at the meeting that the three students are no longer accepted on campus," he said.

The students, George Tswai, 24, Tivane Selomola, 22, and Raymond Mavelevele, 23, are charged with the murder of fellow student Nkosinathi Mhlongo, 22.

Mhlongo, a BA Communications student, was thrown out of a moving taxi in Mankweng near Polokwane on Friday evening.

The students were returning from the Union Buildings in Pretoria where they had submitted a memorandum to education minister Naledi Pandor about rising university fees.

The three accused were not asked to plead to charges of murder when they appeared in the Mankweng magistrate's court on Monday.

The case was postponed to March 3 for their bail applications.

Selomola, also known as "Straw", is chairperson of the South African Students Congress on campus, while Tswai and Mavelevele are with the Student Union Christian Association (SUCA) where Tswai is chairperson and Mavelevele is a committee member.

Other students who witnessed the incident told police that the fighting was fuelled by alcohol and began when they were travelling through Naboomspruit.

Mhlongo was allegedly cornered at the back of the taxi and kicked and punched when he criticised the three for making allegations against another student who wasn't there to defend himself.

Mhlongo's head was also bashed against the side of the taxi before he was eventually thrown out at Mankweng.

Website Promotion: Some Way To Advertise For Free

Website Promotion: Some Way To Advertise For Free
by Elias Maseko

Free internet advertising makes it easy for you to put free ads on several of the premier quality web sites whenever you want, for free. This kind of benefit you get from free internet advertising can only do, to say the least, miracles for your business. Most of these free internet advertising companies give you 3 slots to advertise any product or service for free.

Most web sites promoting free internet advertising have features like classified ads submitter - where you can get a enormous exposure with instant results and expand your sales by large volumes over night, opt-in email lists - non spam bulk emailing program, guaranteed 100% legal. Opt-in email lists are created by people who have volunteered or 'opted-in' their email addresses to these lists. These lists are very effective for creating personalized email to prospective clients.

You have finished making your own website. You have introduced your company and presented your products and services. You have added propositions and promos to catch your target audience's attention. You have achieved the dos and don'ts of building a company web site. But why isn't your website a major success?

Free and low-cost internet banners are spread all through out the World Wide Web. Banners that pop-up at the top of a page or in a separate window would automatically catch your target audience's attention.

Text links. This is not just cheap...this is virtually free! Let someone text link your site and return the favor.

Cheap versus expensive, that's always the question that hounds on whenever we're trying to get something. In the field of internet advertising, just be wise enough to figure out what will suit your needs. Go for what you want as long as there are visible results.

And the best reason to advertise in free internet advertising is because it is absolutely free.

SOUTH AFRICA: Labour dept to inspect Limpopo’s farms

Limpopo – The Department of Labour is to conduct inspections on 325 farms in Limpopo to determine the level of compliance with labour laws.

"The focus of the inspections will be on all applicable labour laws regulating conditions of employment and the determination of the minimum wage with an objective of fostering sound labour relations in the sector," the department said.
These include provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) law and the Unemployment Insurance Act.

"Compliance with the law is not an option, we are determined to enforce the law and employers who are found to be contravening the law will be punished," department spokesperson, Zolisa Sigabi warned.

The inspection comes after last week's blitz conducted in several Limpopo farms, where department officials cracked down on illegal workers on farms and farmers who defaulted labour laws.

The joint operation which involved the police, labour inspectors, officials from the Department of Home Affairs and the Human Rights Commission also discovered that farmers unlawfully recruit and exploit illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe.

Some farmers were found to have flouted labour laws regulating the payment of overtime, excessive underpayment of workers and in one instance discovered violations of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Ms Sigabi said at the time that one crop farmer was found to be deducting money for the UIF from illegal workers but none of the contributions were ever handed over to the department as required by law.

Ms Sigabi said the department requires employers to register anyone who is working for them for 24 hours a month or more.

Failure to comply with the provision of the law constituted a punishable offence which could result in a fine or imprisonment, or even both.

"The crackdown would be intensified in the area until government was satisfied that illegal immigration and workplace exploitation were nipped in the bud," Ms Sigabi said at the time.

She said that inspectors found violations of worker rights, where workers are required to work up to ten hours per day, with wages as low as R107 per month.

In some farms in the Mopane area of Musina, scores of illegal immigrants who worked on the farms were arrested this week as they had no valid permits.

At the Delft tomato and maize farm in the area, officials arrested several illegal workers, who together with 51 local labourers worked seven days a week for monthly wages of between R330 and R1 200 each.

The employer, who was not at the workplace at the time, was also found to be flouting labour laws regulating overtime payment.

At a pepper and beans farm in the Mopane area, 50 illegal workers were found to be working nine hours per day from Monday to Friday for wages ranging between R107 and R900 per month.

However, officials could not access many other farms which were mostly locked up but officials have vowed to make follow-up inspections in those farms. - BuaNews

Polokwane is hungry for houses

THE NEED for housing in Polokwane is overwhelming.
This statement is, at least, based on the reaction of people to an advert that appeared in Capricorn Voice on Wednesday, 20 February. On the same evening  the advertisment was published, scores of people flocked to Peter Mokaba stadium  to be registered on the Polokwane municipality's housing database.
There are currently only 97 serviced stands ready, all situated at Nirvana's extension 3.

The stands range from R203 000 to R358 000 while their sizes range from 450   to 800 square metres. Since Wednesday, over a thousand people have been forming lines at the stadium, most of them sleeping there.
The municipality said it is overwhelmed by the response and that it will use the list of names  as a guide when planning a new  development. Municipal spokesperson, Mr Simon Mokoatedi, said the stands will be allocated on a "first come first serve basis" and that those buying are expected to adhere to strict conditions of payment. "They must pay 15 percent  deposit upon approval of the sales and pay off the remainder in two months, so they should be able to secure bonds within two months," he said.
He added, however,  that people should not panic because more stands are to be serviced as time goes by and that the database will be updated.

Some people came from from as far as Mpumalanga and North West. One local, Thomas Sephoka said he was disappointed that he found that the queue was already very long when he got to the stadium. Sephoka, who is temporarily employed,  said he has  some savings and hopes he will be able to afford a stand.
Originally from Moletjie, Sephoka said he has been renting around Polokwane for over ten years and said he now  needs to own a house he can share with his child and girlfriend.

"I applied for an RDP house a long time ago, so maybe this time I will be lucky and get a stand."
Mokoatedi said no entities like businesses or organisations will be allowed to buy stands and no one will be allowed to buy more than one.
He said those born outside South Africa will have to produce proof of permanent residence in South Africa. He also said the municipality is happy with the reaction.
"It shows that people trust that we can deliver quality service".

Moloto: World Cup is a continental fair

Safa hosted a 2010 Business Summit at Cosmo Leisure on Thursday to discuss possible growth opportunities with local businesspeople ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
The summit was officially opened by Limpopo premier, Mr Sello Moloto, who described 2010 as a opportunity for businesspeople, not only for the 30 days of the 2010 World Cup but also extending beyond the World Cup's closing ceremony.

"Impressions will be long-lasting and I am calling on the business community to ensure visitors will come back after 2010. Government will supply roads and world class stadiums to host the matches, but the locals and service delivery will make it a memorable event, different from the rest, distinctly South African, distinctly African," he said. According to Moloto, government sees the World Cup as a "continental fair", an opportunity to give the African image a boost and "build a community of nations".  "We will all be ambassadors for the whole continent. We have the capacity and the opportunity has arisen - let's take it," Moloto concluded.

FIFA salutes World Cup efforts in South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa - FIFA inspection team Friday concluded a five-da y inspection tour of six of South Africa's 10 World Cup stadiums and heaved prai s es on the 2010 host cities, PANA reports.

"We are very impressed with the efforts made in all venues visited and amazed by the level of details of their preparations," said Ron DelMont who headed the de l egation.

He said South Africa was arguably ahead of previous World Cup organisers at this comparative stage.

The delegation visited stadiums in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Rustenburg, Polokwane, Nelspruit and Mangaung.

The visiting FIFA team is made of experts in the areas of security, competitions , hospitality, media, marketing, Television and IT who carefully analysed the st a dium plans and discussed with project managers the current status and communicat e d any changes that needed to be made to ensure the smooth hosting of the event.

"The technical details and level of understanding of the FIFA and LOC requiremen ts by the host cities and professional teams building the stadiums is really ver y advanced. They fully understand the high requirements and have catered for it d u ring the construction process.

"We have had very positive feedback from the host cities," explained Dennis Mumb le.

Dressed in their hard hats and safety boots, the team toured the two large const ruction sites at Polokwane and Nelspruit taking shape in brilliant weather, and o nly imagined how the two high tech arenas will operate when they open their gate s to the public in late 2009.

The progress made since last year when the team first visited the Peter Mokaba S tadium in Polokwane surprised the delegates.

Due to recent strikes that have now been resolved, Nelspruit's Mbombela Stadium is a few days behind schedule, but according to the delegation there is nothing t o be concerned about.

The FIFA delegates were, however, intrigued by the unique design of the Nelsprui t stadium, which integrated the province's rich wildlife scenery into its featur e s.

Polokwane and other 2010 stadium progress gets thumbs up

World football body FIFA on Friday expressed satisfaction with the progress in South Africa on stadiums that will host 2010 World Cup matches.

Following an inspection tour of six of ten stadiums this week FIFA said in a statement: "We are very impressed with the efforts made in all venues visited and amazed by the level of detail of their preparations.

"I can assure you we are arguably ahead of previous FIFA World Cup organisers at this comparative stage," Ron DelMont, FIFA's head of the inspection tour delegation said.

The inspection team visited stadiums in Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Pretoria, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Nelspruit.

Delays to the start of work on some of the venues and strikes over pay at some of the sites over the past year had led to some concern that the stadiums might not be ready by a FIFA cut-off date of October 2009.

Five of the six stadiums visited by FIFA this week have to be ready even sooner as they will host games in the 2009 Confederations Cup. - Sapa-DPA

Job Interviews - Tips To Review Before You Go

Job Interviews - Tips To Review Before You Go
by Darren Rebarnald

The second step in obtaining the job is meeting the future employer for an interview. The first step that an applicant has successfully completed was sending your application and passing the screening process of the company.

There are many ways a company can receive resumes and those would be from an advertisement that was posted, a headhunter of friend referral, or through the means of a company website to apply for a job online.

Here are a few tips that will help in having a successful interview;

Before attending an interview, it's better to do some research on the company one is applying to.

So that you don't choke during a real job interview, it would be a good idea to practice with mock interview questions by a friend or a family member.

When you go for an interview, it's better to always arrive fifteen minutes early. This demonstrates to employers that the person is prompt and suffices as a good attribute in a possible employee.

Be sure to bring extra copies of your resume and any other pertinent documents to answer certain questions, when you do meet with an employer. An example of certain documents need would be portfolios. These are used by architects and photographers, for example, which show some of the work they have performed in the past.

It's always better to dress suitably. This demonstrates to the employer serious-mindedness on the part of the applicant trying to get the job. It is essential to have your finger-nails and hair well groomed for the interview. The outfit worn ought to be professional. This would imply that shoes must be used to match the outfit. If you generally wear a lot of jewelry, it's better to remove and tone it down for the interview.

When you are in front of the employer, smile and greet the interviewer with a firm (but not bone crushing) handshake which is always a good start to get the interview moving.

During the course of the interview, listen very well to the questions asked. Each must be answered truthfully and confidently to be able to sell yourself to the potential employer.

Subsequently, the applicant ought to thank the recruiter for the time that was given to meet for the interview.

Get Started Blogging: Five Blogging Tips

Get Started Blogging: Five Blogging Tips
by Angela Booth

A few years ago, blogging was a niche activity. Now blogging has become mainstream. Businesses small and large are blogging. But what's a blog?

Think of a blog an instant-publishing Web site. It's a site in a chronological format, so that as new items are added to the blog, they push older items down the Web page.

Your aim in creating a blog is readers, as many readers as possible - thousands a day. Thousands of readers translate into dollars, because you can sell to those readers.

Let's get started blogging. These top tips will help you to create a successful blog:

1. What's it about? Your blog has to be about a specific topic

Your first step is to choose what you'll write about. Stick to one topic per blog. Remember that you'll write about this topic often, so ensure that you choose a topic you like. Maybe you like movies: you go to the movies several times a week. If so, you could create a movie review blog. Now you have an excuse to see all the latest releases.

2. Write your blog as if you're chatting with a friend

Try to make your writing as relaxed and casual as you can on your blog. Imagine that you're chatting to a close friend, or writing someone an email message. If you're writing a business blog, keep the casual feel: you want your readers to feel as if you're talking directly to them.

3. Create a schedule for writing to your blog

Many readers will subscribe to your blog, so give them something to read as often as you can. Decide how often you'll write. In the early months of blogging, write often. You're building up your content so that new readers will find you via the search engines.

4. Help your readers

The more useful information or entertainment you provide, the more popular your blog will become. Think about your readers, and what they want to know about your blog's topic. If you encourage comments, they will tell you what they want to know.

5. Your blog is a conversation: encourage comments

Think of your blog as a conversation with your readers. Ask readers to leave comments, by asking them questions. You can then respond to the comments they leave.
