Traffic arrest whip

THE DEPARTMENT of roads and transport is in hot water after traffic officials arrested the deputy chief whip of the Limpopo Legislature Mr Jack Matlala on the parliamentary premises last Thursday.
The arrest apparently happened when Matlala and other members of the provincial legislature were on lunch.  Roads and transport spokesperson Mr Boikie Tsedu said Matlala was arrested for outstanding traffic fines.

"Traffic officials are doing their job, but we are investigating how they arrested him. If he was arrested on the legislature premises, we condemn the action. The officials  must also say what prompted them to arrest Matlala." A member of parliament who saw the arrest, Mr Maxwell Nemadzivhanani, said it appeared as though the arrest was part of a personal vendetta. He added that it looked like the officials were out to embarrass Matlala. "They were supposed to arrest him outside the legislature premises. We know that there is no one above the law, even lawmakers, but Matlala should not have been arrested where he was."
